MUSIC REVIEW: OBSERVATION By EMMENO featuring D-TRUCE And MAKA

Emmeno is a multi-faceted producer affiliated with K2O entertainment; who in 2018 co-produced the critically acclaimed hip-hop record, REDHOTYCECOLD with tracks such as Say Something, Red Light ft. Jesse Jagz bearing his name credits amongst others on the record by rapper and label signee HOTYCE.

On the wings of the feat of producing likely classics like the tracks I just mentioned, he has chosen to give us a taste of his varying style and depth with OBSERVATION, on which he featured the versatile D-Truce and the immensely talented soul singer MAKA; who before now have given the us amazing singles individually such as KOLO and LOVE AND GAMES respectively.

Now when I got the mail to do this review, I was excited. WHY? This was the second time in three weeks that I had the honour of hearing his releases before the world got to. I must admit though, I was a little unsure. I’d been given a heads up that this was going to be more of soul from Emmeno than we were used to and I was a tad pensive.
But damn was I pleasantly surprised.

MUSIC REVIEW: OBSERVATION By EMMENO featuring D-TRUCE And MAKA

Trumpets, 808s, vinyl scratches, and a nice mellow syncopated rhythm…sound familiar? No? These are what greet my ears in the first ten seconds. But I pause the record at first (seeing as the record was only started in the persona’s space in the first 5 seconds). Afraid I may not like it. Then I take the leap and play.

I was taken into the world of the entire sound. The steady syncopation, the embellished chords and the word painting in the music did well to help a listener with even the shortest attention span stay listening.
From Dusten’s exposé on the communal fear of SARS, to the many nights of Garri, after the young hustler has networked away his or her worth in the City of Dreams that is Lagos; to the happy-go-lucky attitude that every struggling car owner has, to Maka’s resounding voice of calm urging the listener to understand that only he who is in the situation they find themselves in knows why he is in it.

Favourite line: The moto still dey move/E mean say e never damage- D-TRUCE
Why?
It also serves as the nugget. As long as you’re not at your lowest point, you can still keep moving. YOU WILL BE FINE: not just in LAGOS, but wherever you find yourself.

The song won me over. I am sure that you’ll love it too.

Love,
Queen Aika.

Lagos, Nigeria.
